More Backcountry Snowboarding Adventures In The Los Padres National Forest
If the idea of spending an hour and a half skinning uphill for about ten minutes of turns isn't appealing, maybe back country snowboarding isn't for you. I had the afternoon off yesterday so I decided to head down to Mt Pinos to take advantage of the snow that had fallen the day before.
I parked near the Mcgill Trail Head and applied climbing skins to my split snowboard and soon was off up the trail. Near the trail head the snow was getting a bit thin and temps near 40 and I worried I had picked the wrong day to head out. After heading around the north side of the mountain I found the snow to be getting deeper and lighter. After about an hour and a half I found myself on a ridge looking down at the "Y" somewhere between the Mcgill Bowls and Signature Bowls.
After getting the split board back together I headed down through the Sig Bowls for some unbelievable turns in a foot of great light powder. After seeing a few ski tracks near my starting point I soon was away from all signs of human life tracking the untracked all the way down to the road. The coverage on Mt Pinos right now is epic, all in all not a bad way to spend the afternoon. -Dave
